SGI O2: LapisLazuli (``Laz'')
>Some useful SGI links:
I have an SGI O2 (named ``Lapis Lazuli'', both after the stone and the Robert Heinlein character) with a non-original IBM 4.51GiB SCA SCSI hard drive and a second 18GiB SCA SCSI drive for /usr. It has 256MiB of RAM (with another 64MiB of spare RAM that the OS currently can't see). I've wanted an O2 ever since I read Benjy Feen's (a fellow SAGE member) classic Systems Hardware Integration Tasks. Aside from forming a great acronym, that document also formed the thought that's been in my head ever since I first read it: I must have an O2 because it looks like a gumdrop. I don't have a picture yet, but here's what an O2 looks like:
Laz (its nickname) acts as the IRC and shell server for members of the metanetwork.
The output of hinv, showing my hardware inventory from the BIOS point of view, looks like this:
System: IP32
Processor: 200 Mhz R5000, with FPU
Primary I-cache size: 32 Kbytes
Primary D-cache size: 32 Kbytes
Secondary cache size: 1024 Kbytes
Memory size: 256 Mbytes
Graphics: CRM, Rev C
Audio: A3 version 1
SCSI Disk: scsi(0)disk(1)
SCSI CDROM: scsi(0)cdrom(4)
As a very informal benchmark, Lapis Lazuli built bash2 from NetBSD pkgsrc is just under 32 minutes (including fetch time).
There are some technical notes on the architecture of the O2 available on the web.
SGI Indigo2: Purple
I have an Indigo2 (named ``Purple'', because it's, err, purple) running IRIX 6.5.4m. I don't have many details on it yet because I don't use it very much -- my nice 20" Sony trinitron monitor (with the 13W3 cable) died a few months back. I've been thinking about running it headless and using it as an X server for Skinny.
